London Borough of Newham x Street Space

In 2021/22, I was project lead on the public consultation for Beckton Parks Masterplan. I worked with Newham Council to engage with residents about their vision for 36 hectares of green space in the borough.

Leading a small team, we carried out research into the area, before creating a bespoke engagement strategy to hear from a diverse range of local stakeholders. We designed sensitive methodology including surveys, pop-ups, targeted events, and in-depth interviews, and also hired a local engagement producer who would be embedded as part of the team to inform our engagement approach.

We organised 16 in-person events and spoke with 546 members of the public face-to-face. We invested more than £7,500 in local individuals, groups and businesses to share and test their ideas for the future of Beckton Parks.

As a final output for this first stage of the Beckton Parks Masterplan, we produced a colourful and engaging ‘Playbook’ that could be picked up by local residents and the elected landscape architects. This playbook would shape the first steps for the design phase of the green spaces in Beckton.

Analysing a huge array of thoughts and ideas, this document would act as a resource to understand the ambitions of people within the local community, connect with neighbouring organisations and get great ideas for initiatives, events, activities and designs.
